A common Vtiger document workflow problem

Files belong to CRM records, but attaching them takes too many steps

When users handle customer and project files every day, even a small interruption in the upload workflow creates repeated manual work.

Repeated document creation

Users open the Documents module, create a document, choose a file and then connect it to the correct CRM record.

Several files, several actions

A contract, specification and signed attachment may require the same upload process to be repeated several times.

Files can be linked incorrectly

When the user leaves the current record, it is easier to select the wrong Organization, Contact, Project or other relation.

The practical solution

Upload files while you stay on the current Vtiger record

Drag and Drop Documents adds an upload area to the Detail view and Summary view of modules that support related Documents. Drop one or more files, confirm the document information and upload them without leaving the record.

  • Each file is created as a standard Vtiger Document
  • Every uploaded Document is linked to the current record
  • Standard Vtiger permissions and Documents folders remain in use
  • The related Documents list refreshes after upload

Typical business files

Keep important documents with the record where your team needs them

The extension is useful whenever several documents need to remain connected with a customer, contact, sales process, project or another supported CRM record.

Contracts and agreements

Attach signed contracts, amendments, confidentiality agreements and customer approvals to the related record.

Specifications

Store technical requirements, product specifications and scope documents with the relevant opportunity or project.

Signed documents

Upload signed forms, confirmations, handover documents and approved PDF files directly from the record.

Project files

Connect plans, meeting outputs, images and delivery files with the Project or another supported custom module.

How to attach documents to Vtiger CRM records

From desktop file to linked CRM Document in four steps

The user stays in the business context of the current record throughout the whole upload process.

1

Open a CRM record

Open an Organization, Contact, Project or another record that supports related Documents.

2

Drag files over the page

The drop zone appears in the supported Detail view or Summary view.

3

Confirm upload settings

Select the folder, assigned user and an optional description for the Documents.

4

Upload and continue

Follow the progress for every file. The Documents are linked to the open record.

Important: standard Vtiger file storage must already work

Drag and Drop Documents makes a working upload process faster. It does not repair an incorrect storage configuration, missing folder permissions, PHP upload limits or another server problem that prevents Vtiger from saving Documents. Before using the extension, verify that a user can create and upload a Document through the standard Vtiger interface. If standard uploads fail, the underlying CRM or server issue must be resolved first.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ about attaching documents to Vtiger CRM records

Clear answers for teams evaluating a faster Vtiger document upload workflow.

How can I attach documents to Vtiger CRM records faster?

Install Drag and Drop Documents and open a supported record Detail view or Summary view. Drag one or more files onto the page, confirm the document settings and upload. The files are created as Vtiger Documents and linked to the current record.

Does the extension repair broken document uploads in Vtiger 8.4?

No. Standard Vtiger document storage must work first. The extension does not repair PHP upload settings, file permissions, storage paths or other server problems that prevent Vtiger from saving files.

Can several documents be uploaded at once?

Yes. Users can drop multiple files together. Files upload one by one and each file has its own progress indicator.

Are uploaded files linked to the current CRM record?

Yes. Each uploaded file is created as a standard Vtiger Document and automatically connected to the record from which the upload was started.

Does it work with Organizations, Contacts and Projects?

Yes, when the module supports related Documents. The same rule applies to other standard or custom modules. If a module has no Documents relation, the upload zone is not shown.

Does it work in Detail view and Summary view?

Yes. The drag and drop area is available on both supported record views when related Documents are enabled for the module.

Can users choose the Documents folder and owner?

Yes. Before upload, users can choose the Documents folder, select the assigned user and add an optional description.

What happens when a file exceeds the upload limit?

The file is skipped and reported to the user. The actual size limit is controlled by the CRM and server configuration.

Which Vtiger CRM versions are supported?

Drag and Drop Documents is prepared for Vtiger CRM 7.x and Vtiger CRM 8.x.

Is Drag and Drop Documents available in extension packages?

Yes. It is included from the Starter Package and therefore also in Mini, Extended and All Access. A separate monthly or yearly license is also available.
